EMERYVILLE, CA (February 2021)—Vituity is proud to announce the recent certifications of Queen of the Valley Hospital and Temecula Valley Hospital as Comprehensive Stroke Centers (CSC) from DNV GL Healthcare. In conjunction with CSC certification, each hospital also received designation as a Stroke Receiving Center by the County Emergency Medical Services Agency.
CSC certification provides community access to local neurological services, individualized stroke patient care, stroke prevention resources, rehabilitation services, and improved patient outcomes. The certification elevates a hospital’s reputation as an elite provider of neurological care and designation as a preferred provider for stroke care in the region.
Leading the Stroke Certification Process
Vituity Vice President of Neurology Arbi Ohanian, MD, and Director of Operations Kimberly Lopez, RN, MSN, worked in close collaboration with hospital leadership and stroke coordinators to lead, develop, and oversee the certification process.
The DNV GL Healthcare stroke certification program incorporates elements of the National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (NIAHO)® hospital accreditation standards as well as requirements from the guidelines of the Brain Attack Coalition and recommendations of the American Stroke Association. These programs emphasize a disciplined management system and clinical best practices.
The team established target performance metrics to meet both certifications’ requirements, including reducing door-to-needle (DTN) and tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) administration times, and then developed stroke-specific protocols and best practices to meet these metrics. These protocols included pathways of care for stroke diagnosis, treatment, and recovery that improve outcomes and reduce death and disability from stroke.
Serving as a Stroke Resource for the Community
Queen of the Valley Hospital, a 263-bed hospital in West Covina, CA, is renowned for its family-centered maternity services and is home to a certified Primary Stroke Center, state-of-the-art MRI, and a robotic surgery program.
The 140-bed, five-story Temecula Valley Hospital in Temecula, CA, offers its community a comprehensive range of services similar to hospitals in large metropolitan areas, including open heart surgery and neuroscience services.
As a CSC, designated hospitals can deliver the highest quality of stroke care to the most complex cases, offering evidence-based treatments with cutting edge research protocols. CSC-designated hospitals will diagnose and treat stroke patients who require intensive medical and surgical care, specialized tests, or interventional therapies, including patients needing ICU care.
CSC designation also allows hospitals to increase market share by enhancing their ability to attract physicians, strengthening community confidence in the hospital’s quality of care, and increasing patient volume through EMS routing protocols.
Vituity’s Acute Neurology Services
As the U.S. patient population ages and grows, the prevalence of stroke and neurodegenerative disorders is on the rise. Stroke is now the leading cause of long-term disability and the fifth most common cause of death in the United States. Hospitals are challenged by a shortage of neurologists available to meet this growing demand with prompt, specialized care.
In response to this need, Vituity developed a comprehensive acute neurology program for immediate deployment at hospital locations starting in 2017. Our acute neurology practice is designed to raise the level of care for patients with neurological issues by augmenting hospitals’ current staff. We offer the full range of customizable neurological services, including teleneurology/telestroke, neurohospitalist, neurointerventionalist, neurointensivist, neurophysiology, neurodiagnostic care, and stroke certification assistance.
