April 24, 2025 – The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) proudly announced Kidus Shiferawe, a third-year medical student at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, as the recipient of the 2025 Hospital Medicine Scholarship, made possible through a keystone sponsorship from Vituity. Shiferawe will receive a $25,000 medical education scholarship to support his continued academic journey and commitment to advancing healthcare access and equity.
“Receiving the SHM Hospital Medicine Scholarship fund is an immense honor”, said Mr. Shiferawe. “As a medical student committed to addressing healthcare disparities, this scholarship represents a personal and professional milestone in my journey. Hospital medicine provides me the unique opportunity to care for vulnerable populations at their most critical, leveraging the resources available to address systemic inequities. This scholarship will allow me to further my education and research in health equity, ultimately empowering my mission to improve healthcare access for all."
Originally from Ethiopia and raised in Kentucky, Shiferawe holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science and a master’s in public health from Eastern Kentucky University. As Vice President of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) at the University of Kentucky, he co-chaired the Regional Medical Education Conference, which empowers students to become “clinically excellent, culturally competent, and socially conscious physicians.” His scholarly concentration in Clinical and Translational Research includes investigations into socioeconomic, geographic, and clinical disparities in lung cancer screening. He also serves on the UK College of Medicine’s admissions committee, where he advocates for the selection of applicants committed to caring for underserved populations.
“Kidus Shiferawe’s unwavering dedication to health equity, leadership in academic research, and service to the medical student community exemplify the spirit of the Hospital Medicine Scholarship,” said Jenna Goldstein, SHM’s Chief of Staff.
“Kidus represents the future of hospital medicine,” said Javay Walton, Vice President of Community Impact at Vituity. “His efforts to increase healthcare accessibility through research and advocacy reflect the values that Vituity seeks to uplift through this scholarship.”
The scholarship was presented at SHM Converge 2025, SHM’s annual conference in Las Vegas, NV, on April 24. To learn more about the SHM Hospital Medicine Scholarship, visit https://www.hospitalmedicine.org/membership/member-awards/shms-hospital-medicine-scholarship-fund/.
