2021 Community Emergency Medicine Excellence Award

(EMERYVILLE, Calif.) Vituity is pleased to announce that Mike McGee, MD, MPH, has been recognized by the American College of Emergency Physicians with the 2021 Community Emergency Medicine Excellence Award. McGee was chosen based on his outstanding contributions to emergency medicine, public health, and violence prevention in northwest Indiana and Chicago. McGee, a native of Gary, Indiana, currently practices at Methodist Hospitals in Gary and Merrillville.

McGee attended Rush University Medical School in Chicago and completed his residency in emergency medicine at New York University/Bellevue Hospital Medical Center. He also holds a Master of Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago. McGee is active in ACEP’s Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity section, where he chairs the Firearm Violence and Injury Prevention Committee.

When McGee joined Methodist in 2008, he found himself treating young patients daily for gunshot wounds. This experience inspired him to team up with fellow physicians to found Project Outreach and Prevention on Youth Violence, a health promotion, violence prevention, and career development program.

POP works with local school districts to educate students in leadership and conflict resolution. McGee personally visits many participating schools to share his experiences treating gunshot victims in the ED. He also explains choices students can make to avoid and prevent gun violence. In addition, POP’s Code Blue program brings law enforcement officers to classrooms to build positive relationships with students.

McGee and colleagues believe that economic opportunity helps to heal community trauma and break the cycle of gun violence. To this end, POP offers mentoring, shadowing opportunities, and merit-based scholarships for minority high school students interested in health careers. Participating institutions include Methodist, Indiana University Northwest, Purdue University Calumet, and local physician and dentist offices.

In addition to his emergency medicine practice, McGee is co-owner, CEO and president of Premier Urgent Care, Chicago’s first Black-owned urgent care facility. A percentage of Premier’s profits are donated to local health promotion and violence prevention programs.

McGee was inspired to become a physician by his mother, who worked as a nurse for over 30 years.

The ACEP Community Emergency Medicine Excellence Award is presented at the Emergency Medicine Practice Committee meeting during the ACEP annual meeting. Recipients are determined by the Emergency Medicine Practice Committee and ACEP board of directors. Recipients are also recognized at the annual President’s Awards Gala.

McGee is the fourth Vituity physician to win this award, following in the footsteps of Adnan Hussain, MD (2020); Andrew Southard, MD (2019); and Sergio Hernandez, MD (2018).
