With the increasing popularity of outdoor recreation, emergency physicians find themselves treating various conditions unique to the wilderness environment. Vituity is proud to offer a unique residency rotation dedicated to wilderness emergency medicine.

 

The Riverside University Health System Wilderness Medicine Fellowship is a one-year program that offers unique training with a focus on both academic and field experience in the rugged environment of Joshua Tree National Park to open water and rivers, to the mountains of Southern California.

Riverside University Health System Medical Center (RUHS) located in Moreno Valley is a state-of-the-art tertiary care and level 1 adult and pediatric trauma facility that cares for 90,000 patients/year with a total of 439 beds. This location offers adult, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care units, an obstetrics unit, and complete pulmonary services with hyperbaric oxygen treatment capabilities.

Curriculum

This fellowship prepares senior residents to excel in austere medicine, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Fellows will train in diverse environments, from the rugged landscapes of Joshua Tree and Southern California’s mountains to open water and mobile learning platforms, covering the full scope of modern wilderness medicine.

 

  • Diving and marine medicine through collaboration with NOAA
  • 3-week SCUBA certification course
  • Swift water rescue
  • Technical search and rescue skills
  • Training as formal member of Riverside Mountain Rescue team
  • Rock climbing techniques
  • Medical care training in collaboration with Joshua Tree search and rescue

Eligibility

The Wilderness Medicine Fellowship is open to graduates of an AGME accredited residency program in Emergency Medicine. You must be board certified or board eligible and be able to obtain a California medical license.

Compensation and Benefits

Fellows receive regular compensation for clinical hours as an attending physician and Vituity Partner (including Partnership advancement) and are eligible for the full benefits available to all physicians.
