Ascension’s Fellowship is a 9-month program that rotates through three emergency departments in the Chicagoland area. This program offers PAs the opportunity to gain clinical and procedural excellence in the practice of emergency medicine. It utilizes didactic teaching and hands-on clinical training to prepare fellows to rapidly evaluate emergent and non-emergent patients and become highly skilled, competent, compassionate, and efficient providers.

Saint Francis Hospital is a nationally recognized, full-service hospital, Level I Trauma Center, and is listed as one of the Best Hospitals in Metro Chicago by U.S. News & World Report. It has been designated a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Emergency Department sees approximately 36,000 adult and pediatric patients each year.

Saints Mary & Elizabeth Medical is an award-winning medical center and the largest hospital on the northwest side of Chicago, with 450 inpatient beds and a comprehensive Emergency Department. It’s the second largest behavioral health hospital in Illinois. The ED sees over 65,000 Emergency Department visits. It is a Joint Commission Certified Primary Stroke Center.

Located in the 3rd largest city in Illinois, Saint Joseph Medical Center’s inpatient areas have over 450 inpatient beds. Joliet is located 40 miles southwest of Chicago with a population slightly over 149,000. The Emergency Department sees over 60,000 Emergency Department visits and is designated as a Level II Trauma Center.

Curriculum

 

The Vituity EMPA Fellowship at Ascension Saint Francis provides clinical and didactic instruction. The curriculum is structured on the American College of Emergency Physicians' (ACEP) Model of Clinical Practice. Each month, fellows will spend approximately 130 hours doing clinical shifts and 36 hours of didactic time. Fellows will be reimbursed for both their clinical and educational hours.

 

The clinical practicum is focused on hands-on training, with rotations through three hospitals in the Ascension system. PAs will spend 8 months rotating through the ED and 1 month off service in trauma. Over the course of the 9-month fellowship, each fellow works a minimum of 1,690 clinical hours in acute EM and Trauma care.

 

The didactic component of the fellowship includes: an online curriculum that fellows will complete individually, weekly conferences with the Resurrection EM residents, biweekly touch-bases and didactics with leadership, and a multitude of skills/sim labs and other miscellaneous teaching sessions throughout the year. We encourage feedback and interaction from all fellows.

Eligibility

 

Ascension’s Fellowship accepts Physician Assistants (PAs) only. A fellow must be a graduate of an ARC-PA accredited program, eligible for and/or possess current IL Medical Board Physician Assistant Licensure (eligible candidates must be fully licensed by the start of the program), and eligible for and/or possess current DEA licensure (eligible candidates must be fully licensed by the start of the program)." Previous EMS/ED work experience is highly desirable but not required.
